Behind the Scenes at the Photo Shoot for With Every Letter

Last week I was thrilled to see the final book cover for With Every Letter, the first book in the Wings of the Nightingale series, coming in September 2012.

Today one of my Facebook friends (thank you, Ruth!) alerted me to a blog post about the photo shoot for the cover art. I was so impressed with the attention to every detail in the cover art – Mellie’s 1/4 Filipino, 3/4 Anglo ethnicity, the hairstyle, period makeup, and the spot-on uniform. I also loved how the photo captured Mellie’s shyness, but also her strength and determination.

So here’s the story behind the cover shoot by the amazingly talented Brandon Hill Photos. Brandon Hill tells the story of all the hard work put in to get these details right – especially the extremely rare uniform. Please click on the link and see!

With Every Letter is now featured on my publisher’s website at Revell Books, and is available for pre-order on ChristianBook.com, Amazon.com, and Barnes & Noble.

The Wings of the Nightingale series follows three World War II flight nurses as they find friendship, love, and peril in the skies and on the shores of the Mediterranean.

Here’s the back cover copy for With Every Letter:

Lt. Mellie Blake is a nurse serving in the 802nd Medical Squadron, Air Evacuation, Transport. As part of a morale building program, she reluctantly enters into an anonymous correspondence with Lt. Tom MacGilliver, an officer in the 908th Engineer Aviation Battalion in North Africa. As their letters crisscross the Atlantic, Tom and Mellie develop a unique friendship despite not knowing the other’s true identity. When both are transferred to Algeria, the two are poised to meet face to face for the first time. Will they overcome their fears and reveal who they are, or will their future be held hostage to their past? And can they learn to trust God and embrace the gift of love he offers them?

Combining excellent research and attention to detail with a flair for romance, Sarah Sundin brings to life the perilous challenges of WWII aviation, nursing, and true love.

So funny! For a second I decided to head over and buy this book on Amazon. To pre-order it! I forgot I already have my name on one!

Sarah, it looks wonderful! I am so happy for you! I haven’t been on FB at all lately. Homeschooling and blogging take up about every moment I have, lol. Congratulations, my friend and many blessings, Lisa

The cover is awesome, Sarah. I enjoyed reading the post and learning how much goes into a cover shoot. Brandon really did an outstanding job. No wonder you’re so happy with your “cover girl.”

Thanks Sarah, so glad you were able to stumble onto my blogpost on this. I think from here on out I’ll keep a lookout for the authors that I publish behind-the-scenes blog posts on. In case anyone is interested, there’s video of two other historical fiction shoots below that I shot for last year. It’s always fun to see how they’re made. (The Elizabethan model is my wife. 😉

On my wish list. I love your books Sarah and can’t wait to read your new series. I love the cover, so original looking and tells a story on its own.

Thanks, everyone! The entire team did such a fabulous job with this cover.

Brandon – I would strongly recommend that! I know I was tickled to see the article and I’m sure other authors would be also. By the way, I watched that video, and it was lovely – and so is your wife 🙂
