Book Beat – Watercolor Dreams by Sherry Kyle & Giveaway!

Watercolor DreamsWhat do you do when everything – and everyone – seems to get in the way of your dream?

In 1910, in the beautiful beach town of Carmel, California, artists congregate. Anna Lewis works as a nanny to two mischievous boys, but only until she can start selling her watercolor paintings. While Anna is painting a seascape one day, a man wanders into her view, and she absentmindedly sketches him into her painting, intrigued by his pensive nature.

Charles Jordan is supposed to be celebrating his marriage – but his bride jilted him at the altar – for his own cousin. Charles is living with his feisty great-aunt to recuperate and to finish his novel. Charles’s offhand comment about Anna’s painting offends her, but as life threatens to strip away her dreams, she finds herself drawn more and more into Charles’s life. But how could she care for a man who doesn’t respect her dreams?

Watercolor Dreams by Sherry Kyle charmed me. The breezy seaside setting, the historical details, and the entertaining side characters are delightful, but the theme and the conflicted characters take this sweet romance deeper. I highly recommend this novel!

I’ve not been to any Ocean/Sea beaches, but I greatly enjoy the ‘beach’ of Lake Superior in Duluth, MN. 🙂

  2. Claudia Davis

My favorite beach tends to me whichever one I am on at the time, but probably my most favorite is the beach at the Atlantis in Nassau, Bahamas.

  3. Brittany Keating

My favorite beach is Hatteras Island in NC. I adore NC’s Outer Banks and this particular stretch does not have beach front development, so it’s peaceful, quiet, and not usually overrun with crowds.

    • Sherry Kyle

Debbie, I didn’t know if you saw my comment earlier, but Natural Bridges Beach is where my husband proposed! 🙂

  4. Rebecca Wilson

I love rocky coastlines as in Oregon.

  5. Janette Foreman

I enjoyed the beach I visited with my husband and family in San Diego two years ago. Shops and restaurants lined the beach, as well as cute homes. We went at sunset. It was beautiful and warm!

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Janette,

San Diego is beautiful! One of my favorite beaches in southern CA is Seal Beach. Have you ever been there?

      • Janette Foreman

I’m not sure! haha. I’ve only been to one beach and it was in San Diego. I wish I could remember the name of it!

  6. Rose Blackard

My favorite beach is Waikiki Beach in Oahu in Hawaii.

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Rose,

Oh, I’d like to visit Hawaii again. I’ve gone twice, both on family vacations when I was a child. It’s been WAY too long!

  7. Sherry Kyle

Thank you, Sarah, for the book review!

Hi Raechel, Claudia, Brittany, Debbie, and Rebecca,

I love the ocean, in fact, I walk by it or see it everyday! It would be fun to try to go to all the beaches you have mentioned. I have been to one. Debbie mentioned the beach where my husband proposed! Yes, Natural Bridges will always hold a special place in my heart.

  8. Caryl Kane

I grew up near the Gulf Coast in Texas, not pretty. I would love to visit the beaches in Antigua. Beautiful sand, seclusion and scenery would be a welcome retreat.

    • Sherry Kyle

Antigua sounds gorgeous, Caryl. All this talk of oceans makes me realize I need a vacation! 🙂

  9. Velva Brown

I love the beach in Destin, Florida. I love looking at the ocean in Cambria, California!

      Hi Velva,

I’ve never been to Destin, Florida, but I’ve stayed a couple of nights in Cambria.

  10. Terri Wangard

The beach in Naples, Florida, is the best for shelling.

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Terri,

Do you collect shells? I have a few big ones from Tahiti. I’ll have to go to Naples, FL sometime to collect more.

  11. Whitney L

Every winter for 40 some years, I walked in the sun and sand on Fort Myers Beach. Will never get closer to heaven while on this earth!

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Joan,

I can hear the longing in your voice to go back to Fort Myers Beach! Heaven will definitely be a beautiful place.

  14. Tami

I have walked many beaches… Mauritius, Cape Town, Durban, California, Carolinas, NJ, Florida, TX, the great lakes… I must say I have the best memories of the Mauritius beaches – as that is where I honeymooned. 😉

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Tami,

I admit I had to look up Mauritius beaches on Google. The pictures I saw blew me away. Gorgeous!

  15. anne

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Danielle,

Gotta love Hawaii! I hope to go there again soon. Maybe my next big anniversary in four years. (Yes, it has a 0 at the end!)

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Tammy,

I like how you called it ‘my beach.’ Now there’s a girl who loves where she lives. 🙂

  17. Sandra Steward

I have never been to a beach and seen the water, but would love to see the waves flow onto the shore and flow away.

  18. Patty

I would love to visit Hawaii! As for somewhere I’ve been, Hilton Head Island is a favorite…

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Patty,

You and me both! I’ve wanted to go to Hawaii for quite some time. Maybe we’ll get there sooner or later… 😉

  19. Sharon Miller

My favorite beach is Tamarack Beach in Carlsbad, CA because it’s where my parents used to live and we took our sons there all the time. Many memories lurking here. I would love to win your book, Watercolor Dreams.

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Sharon,

Memories are so sentimental. I have many college memories of camping down at Carlsbad with the surf club. No, I’m not a surfer, but my college boyfriend (now my husband) was. 🙂

  20. Renee G

My favorite beach is on Coronado Island near San Diego.

  21. Erika Hart

My Favorite place in the whole world is Carmel beach. I went there June 2006 it was overcast and damp but honestly it was so beautiful and peaceful. I hope to go back again one day.

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Erika,

Yay! I’m so excited that you’ve been to Carmel! It’s usually foggy and damp in the summers, but like you said, still so beautiful and peaceful. And when the sun shines . . . there’s nothing like it!

  22. Patti

Thanks for highlighting this book. It sounds like a terrific read…and that cover is gorgeous!!

I lived in Florida for over 20 years, so any number of that state’s beaches hold wonderful memories for me and are, thus, my favorite. I also love coastal Oregon, especially Cannon Beach. Oh, and Crescent City, California has the most charming little lighthouse…it’s on an island only reached during low tide. I would love to live in that little lighthouse.

Thanks for offering this book as a giveaway.

    Blessings,
    Patti

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Patti,

Thank you for the compliment on the cover! I love it too. 🙂 Sounds like you’ve gone from one coast to the other. So many pretty beaches. I’m taken with lighthouses too. I have a couple of pictures of lighthouses.

  23. bee

my favorite dream beach would have to be in Hawaii – would love to visit there some day!

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Bee,

Which island would you go to? Growing up I vacationed in Maui (5th grade) and Kauai (10th grade), both gorgeous places. It’s been too many years…

  24. Diane B

My favorite beach would be “any” beach! 🙂 I live in SC so, perhaps Mrytle would be my choice! I would enjoy more chances to visit light houses in Georgia and in N.C.

  25. Sherry Kyle

    Hi Diane,

Your comment made me smile. Yes, “any” beach would make me happy too. Hope you get a chance to visit Mrytle beach soon.

  26. Samantha S

Any beach next to an ocean is my favorite! We live in a landlocked state right now but I grew up and lived near a beach most of my life. I really miss it!

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Samantha,

Time for a vacation! 🙂 All this beach talk makes me want to book a ticket. Want to know a secret? Before kids (over twenty years ago) my husband and I went to the island of Moorea. We have a friend who still lives there. He’s a marine biologist and is married to a Tahitian woman. She’s still an incredible dancer.

  27. Connie Hendryx

My favorite beach is Moonstone Beach on the California coast (north of Eureka, CA)…..Thanks for the giveaway….! Sounds like a great book!

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Connie,

I’ve never been to Moonstone Beach. Sounds like a great setting for my next novel! I’ll have to check it out.

  28. Rachael K

Outside of the general water temperature, Park Point (the longest freshwater sand spit in the world) in Duluth, MN is a great beach! But the best winter surfing is off the rock beaches a little farther up the shore.

    • Sherry Kyle

      Hi Rachael,

Are you a surfer? I’m married to one. 🙂 He’s been surfing for thirty-five years. A few weeks back he and a friend were surfing and his friend saw a shark! No joke. He said he remained calm and helped a twelve-year-old boy out of the water. That poor kid was freaking out!

  29. Liz

My family has been going to Duck (yes, that’s its real name!) on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for 10 years and it is truly my happy place–in addition to being beautiful it’s where our family and family friends have spent many wonderful days.

  30. Sarah Sundin

Thank you for your beachy-keen comments, everyone! I’ve selected a winner and will post tomorrow morning.
