75 Years Ago—Oct. 23, 1944: Battle of Leyte Gulf begins as Japanese fleet lures the US Third Fleet away from the landing beaches at Leyte in the Philippines.

In the Battle of Leyte Gulf, US submarines Darter and Dace sink Japanese heavy cruisers Atago and Maya.
